Jimmy, nativo de New York, tomó su primera guitarra a los 6 años y a los 12 ya tocaba en sus primeros conciertos.Originalmente fue inspirado por los Rolling Stones, pero enseguida se interesó en discos de los pesos pesados del blues, como Muddy Waters y John Lee Hooker, adquiriendo las habilidades necesarias para convertirse en un gran sesionista.Rip rápidamente se convirtió en pieza fundamental tanto de estudio, como segunda guitarra de tours mundiales.Sus colaboraciones más importantes incluyen Hall & Oates, Deborah Harry, Patty Smyth, Kid Creole, Tom Verlaine entre otros. Ocasionalmente tuvo la posibilidad de grabar con uno de los artistas que lo habían inspirado en sus inicios.
A fines de los '80 a Rip le pidieron que participara en la grabación del disco solista de Mick Jagger "Primitive Cool" y luego se unió a la gira mundial.Luego continuó co-escribiendo canciones con Mick y actuó como guitarrista,arreglador y director musical de "Wandering Spirit" album solista 1993 de Jagger.
En 1997, Rip estrena su album solista "Way Past Blue". Pero su mayor desafío no había llegado aún, producir y ser guitarrista del album "Last Man Standing" de Jerry Lee Lewis.
"Last Man Standing" es un monstruo de 22 temas que llevó 4 años realizarse. El album apunta a reintroducir al mundo a Jerry Lee, un tesoro Americano, pionero del verdadero Rock n' Roll. "Last Man Standing" cuenta con la participación de B. B. King, Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, Ringo Starr, Mick Jagger, Ronnie Wood, Neil Young, Rod Stewart, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Bruce Springsteen, John Fogerty, Little Richard, Toby Keith, Robbie Robertson, Don Henley, Delaney Bramlett, Nils Logfren, Kris Kristofferson, George Jones y Kid Rock
En 2004, Jimmy compuso la banda sonora para la película "The Big Bounce" como también para muchos shows famosos de The History Channel. También fue director musical para el especial televisivo de TNT "Willie Nelson & Friends"_Angels & Outlaws" un show de 2 horas en el que participaron Bob Dylan, Joe Walsh, Toby Keith, Merle Haggard, Keith Richards, Kid Rock Al Green, Shelby Lynne, Carole King entre otros.También encontró tiempo para grabar y producir albums para Ivan Neville y B'nard Fowler.
En 2007 Rip completa su trabajo como director musical, guitarrista y productor en el DVD de Jerry Lee Lewis "Last Man Satnding Live" (por el cúal recibio el DVD de Oro). Celebró el estreno de "Tom Verlaine & Jimmy Rip Music for Experimental Film" y completó un CD para el virtuso del sitar Nishat Khan. Actualmente está trabajando en su nuevo CD, produciendo al pionero del punk Holly Beth Vincent, co-produciendo y tocando la guitarra en un nuevo disco con legendaria banda neoyokina Television.
